WANT TO MAKE AN INDIE FILM?

Jane Merrow acts Avatar

If you want to go into indie filmmaking, is always good to start off by making short films. I did and thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. It’s fast, it’s relatively cheap and you can learn a lot about filmmaking, how to think on your feet, be flexible and work in a real team – cast and crew. And you can easily release your short on YouTube, build an audience and get feedback. It’s a great way to learn the process, because making a feature length film is a whole other story – you need serious talent, serious money and serious planning. Ie: Production skills and the experience.

Hi Jane, very cool blog you have here – I think this is a very positive message, I’ve made a couple of zero budget feature films myself, and its takes a lot to pull it all together – I also work with young people on short films with the Education Authority in Ireland and this is a great message for our young people! Loved you in The Saint! Good health!!

Hi David…thank you. I have been writing blogs on and off for years, largely to keep my hand in writing wise and keep up with our industry. I have only had this blogging site for a short while. Good for you re your film-making. As you say pulling a feature together is hard. I have done mainly shorts, they are easier, logistically, but possibly more interesting and challenging to tell a story quickly and satisfy an audience. However they are the best training for young people. Are your young peoples’ films available to be seen. PLease send me a link, if so. All the best – Jane
